Q. I’ve put on a lot of weight over the past couple of years, probably due to the menopause. Am I stuck with it?

Only if you want to be. You are no more stuck with weight in your 40s or 50s than you are at 15.

In fact, a healthy, well-balanced diet during menopause will not only help you to lose weight, it will also help to alleviate many common menopausal symptoms.

  • As fluid retention can be a problem at this time drink plenty of water, fruit and vegetable juices, reduce your intake of caffeine and salt.
  • Limit yourself to 1-2 alcoholic drinks 4-5 times a week.
  • Enjoy candy/ chocolate/fast food only as an occasional treat.
  • Include plenty of fruit, vegetables and salads in your daily diet.

Importance of Exercise

Exercise is vital for weight control during menopause. Like it or not, our bodies do slow down as we get older so we need to stay active. Exercise increases our metabolism and helps to burn off stored fat. Also, it increases the proportion of muscle to fat in our bodies which is good for our weight as muscles need more calories than fat.
