How to Reduce Fat & Lose Weight by Reducing Fat in Salads

Q. I have been trying to lose weight for the past 6 months, and even though I eat a lot of salads my weight is not shifting. Why is this?

Ans. A good way to reduce fat and calories is to fill up on salads. Trouble is, some ‘salad’ foods contain high amounts of fat.

For example:

  • 1/4 cup of potato salad can contain 10g fat.
  • 1/4 cup of coleslaw can contain 10g of fat.
  • 1 tablespoon of salad dressing can contain 9g of fat.
  • 1 tablespoon of mayonnaise 12g of fat.
  • 1 ounce nuts can contain 15g fat.

So, unless you choose carefully, its easy to take in anything up to 50g of fat, or more in a salad.

A low-fat salad should include plenty of greens, carrots, peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, mushrooms, cabbage, spinach and (ideally) fat-free dressing.
