Which are the Healthy Fats/Oils?

At present, mono-unsaturated fat/oil is believed to be better at lowering bad cholesterol (LDL) while ignoring good cholesterol (HDL) than poly-unsaturated fat.

However, poly-unsaturated fats include the family of omega 3 and omega 6 fats, known as essential fatty acids.

Unrefined Oils are Best

In general, the less refined it is, the better.

Chemically processed oils are quite different from mechanically pressed oils (much better), and since pesticides often gather in oils, organic oils are best.

The best oil is unrefined, mechanically pressed plant oil which is pesticide free and stored in opaque glass containers.

  • Good choices include: canola oil, hemp seed oil, flax oil, soya oil and walnut oil.
  • Good oily foods include: salmon, mackerel, sardines, nuts and seeds.

Note: From a weight loss viewpoint, all oils are equally fattening. (120 calories/tbsp)
