Americans Overestimate Exercise

A poll involving over 1500 US adults and teenagers showed that 88% of adults and 84% of adolescents considered they were getting enough exercise for health; 76% of parents also felt their children had adequate exercise. The truth is probably much different, according to the National Association for Sport and Physical Education.

Further, self-estimates of time spent by teenagers watching television give an average of about two hours per day, whereas the truth is closer to five hours. Barriers to greater activity for teens include availability of TV, computer and video games, but lack of interest and lack of suitable recreational areas were also considered important. Adults felt that barriers to exercise included work and lack of time, health problems and simple lack of interest again. Most people accepted exercise benefited health, but few felt inclined to embrace it.
