Coral calcium is a form of calcium (calcium carbonate) used in supplements. The mineral calcium has many health benefits. It strengthens bones, may help to reduce the risk of colon cancer, high blood pressure and premenstrual syndrome. Calcium is also good for muscle function, heart function, blood-clotting and nerve function. Coral calcium supplements are one type of calcium supplementation, although perhaps a pricy option compared with ordinary calcium supplements.
Another option to ensure a healthy intake of calcium is to consume more dairy foods. However, if you want to lose weight, eating more dairy foods may cause you to exceed your calorie allowance. Also, dairy products may be high in fat – which contains twice the calories of carbohydrate or protein. So you may be better off with calcium supplements which typically contain zero calories or fat.
Recent clinical trials demonstrate that calcium supplements may help weight loss. Thus coral calcium supplements may have a role to play in reducing obesity. However, at $15-35 per bottle, coral calcium is more expensive than regular calcium tablets.
