Diet Nutrition & Breakfast

A number of studies show that children who eat a nutritious breakfast do better in school. Now researchers in Canada can show kids aren’t the only ones who benefit from a good breakfast. Older adults who eat breakfast have better memory function than those who skip breakfast.

The researchers tested a group of senior adults aged 60 to 84. One time the group was just given a glass of water before they took word-recall and long-term memory tests. The next time, they got a nutritious breakfast of whole grain cereal, milk and juice before they took the tests. The group scored better on tests when they ate breakfast.

Subjects who already had memory problems or who had adult-onset diabetes showed the most improvement when they ate breakfast. Diabetes can affect brain function, and by controlling variations in blood sugar by eating properly, some of those effects may be diminished.

Nutrition experts at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas say a nutritious breakfast should be part of everyone’s diet. Even if you don’t like breakfast food such as cereal, eating something with whole grains or protein will make a difference in your day. Try a bit of peanut butter on toast, some low-fat yogurt or a piece of fruit if you have to eat on the run.
